If you have more than one child, you will have to deal with sibling rivalry at some point of time. Conflict between children is normal as they compete for your attention. But the quality of a relationship is determined how the conflict is resolved. Many people are advised to oversee rivalry and let the children sort it out themselves. But, it is essential for parents to know what they are dealing with and have strategies to minimize the sibling rivalry in your house and be able to restore some harmony in your house.
If you are dealing with sibling rivalry in your home, you are not alone. Here are top three strategies to tackle sibling rivalry effectively –
- Hold a family meeting and tell your children what you expect from them and why you want them to get along. You need to allow each of them to express their feelings and points of view. By listening to them, you need to create new rules for situations that are most likely to create disagreements among them.
- Allow your children to resolve the issue on their own without you intervening. Ask them to stop shouting and communicate with each other to come to a compromise on their own. This way, they will not only learn to communicate better, they will also learn to stand up for themselves.
- Minimize competition between your children. Instead of working against each other to come out as winner, give them certain tasks that they need to complete together. This way they learn to accept each other and spend quality time together without arguing.
- Encourage your older child to be a good leader – which includes sharing, caring for those younger, caring, share responsibilities, take ownership, and teach their younger sibling.
It is your duty to teach your children to be positive and help them feel good about themselves. Even though things won’t change within a day, you should put more efforts on fostering positive sibling relationship rather than just breaking conflict whenever you see one.
